Black Oats

Black Oats are used as a cool season, annual, rotational cover crop. Black oats match the forage potential of rye and have great digestibility, making it a great choice for forage. It has higher nitrogen concentration and lower C:N ratio than many other common cover crops. Allelopathic effects make it an excellent choice to discourage small-seeded weed species. Black Oats can be terminated by tilling, applying herbicides, mowing, or a roller crimper. Black Oats generally do not tolerate cold and will winter kill at temperatures less than 19°F depending on growth stage.
