Willow Cuttings

The cuttings looked great and I potted them right away. The thing that disappointed me enough to give a 3 star rating was that out of the 4 varieties, only 2 were for my zone 3. Sadly half of them won't survive our northern MN winters. Because it was a mix I didnt know what varieties I would get make sure they were our growing zone. I also ordered Elderberries for a cold climate so I mistakenly assumed the willows would be chosen accordingly.

Hey Monica! Thanks for reaching out! I would encourage you to still plant the willows that say they won't survive your winters. We successfully grow Rams Horn willow which is less hardy than we are rated for. We coppace down to the ground every winter right before the severe cold, and mulch the plants. The stems we then store in water in our cooler until we are ready to sell. In the spring they come back more vigorous than ever! I would also see how you can protect them, plant in a sheltered area, etc.
