Gooseberries are one of those old-fashioned fruits that deserve a comeback. These gooseberry cuttings are a great way to establish one or two berry bushes in your garden or on your homestead. Gooseberries are hardy, compact shrubs that thrive in cooler climates and produce tart-to-sweet berries perfect for fresh eating, jams, pies, and preserves. They’re well-suited to home gardens, food forests, and homesteads—and once established, they’ll produce for years.
Available Cultivars:
-
Black Velvet – A nearly thornless variety with deep purple to black berries and rich, sweet flavor when fully ripe.
-

Cultivation Tips
Soil requirements:
Gooseberries prefer well-drained soil with good organic matter. They tolerate heavier soils better than many fruit crops but still appreciate good drainage.
Sunlight:
Full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, some afternoon shade can help prevent stress and improve fruit quality.
Watering:
Water regularly during establishment and during dry spells. Consistent moisture helps with berry size and overall plant health.
Harvesting:
Harvest berries when they reach full color and soften slightly. Some varieties are tart when underripe but sweeten significantly as they mature.
