Short on space? Ficus carica ‘Fignomenal’ is a compact fig variety that produces full-size fruits on a houseplant-sized tree. Reaching only 2-3 feet tall, this dwarf fig was bred specifically for containers and patios. Despite its size, ‘Fignomenal’ produces full-size, sweet figs with classic fig texture and flavor. It's become a favorite for backyard growers, homesteaders, and anyone looking to grow their own figs without having the space for a full tree.

Plants start shipping in spring after danger of freezing and will come in robust 2" plugs.

Why Grow ‘Fignomenal’ Fig?

Perfect for Containers
Its compact size makes it ideal for patios, porches, and small gardens.

Full-Size, Sweet Figs
Don’t let the size fool you—this plant produces rich, flavorful figs just like larger trees.

Cold-Hardy for a Fig
Though not as cold-hardy as the Chicago Hardy Fig, the Fignomenal is still more tolerant of cooler climates than many fig varieties, especially when grown in containers that can be protected in winter.

Growing Information

🌱 Plant Type: Perennial fruiting shrub/tree
🌱 Hardiness Zones: 7–10 (can be grown in colder zones with winter protection, or if you bring in the containers during winter)
🌱 When to Plant: Spring after last frost
🌱 When to Harvest: Late summer to early fall

Cultivation Tips

  • Soil requirements: Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich soil. For containers, use a high-quality potting mix with good drainage.
  • Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hours per day) for best growth and fruiting.
  • Watering: Water regularly, especially for container-grown plants. Allow the top inch of soil to dry slightly between waterings to avoid waterlogged roots.
  • Harvesting: Figs are ready when they soften, droop slightly on the stem, and develop full color. Harvest gently—ripe figs are delicate.

‘Fignomenal’ is self-fertile, so you only need one plant to get fruit. In colder climates, container-grown plants can be moved into an unheated garage or protected area for winter. Due to the small size, it's easy to take care of this dwarf fig like you would a houseplant.
