Jachlo is a Purple Stripe hardneck garlic with Eastern European origins, and it's one of the more visually striking varieties you'll find. The bulb wrappers show vivid purple streaking that makes it stand out in the garden and at the market. Flavor-wise, Purple Stripe varieties are widely regarded as some of the best-tasting garlic you can grow, particularly for roasting.
If you grew German Red with us last year, Jachlo is the closest variety in our new lineup—same Purple Stripe type, same bold flavor and attractive purple markings.
SHIPPING INFO: Seed garlic starts shipping in early October.
Why Grow Jachlo Garlic?
🎨 Stunning Appearance: The vivid purple-streaked wrappers and clove skins make Jachlo one of the most attractive garlic varieties to grow—a favorite with farmers market customers.
🔥 Bold, Complex Flavor: Purple Stripe varieties are celebrated for their rich, lively flavor and a bright initial heat that mellows into a smooth, lingering finish. Widely considered among the best garlic types for roasting.
⏳ Flavor That Gets Better With Age: Unlike most garlic, Purple Stripe varieties like Jachlo actually intensify in flavor as they cure and store.
Growing Information
🌱 Plant Type: Hardneck garlic
🌱 Hardiness Zones: 3–7
🌱 When to Plant: Fall, 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes
🌱 When to Harvest: Mid-summer (typically July-August), when the lower 3–4 leaves have browned but 5–6 upper leaves are still green
Cultivation Tips
- Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with good fertility. Garlic does not like to sit in wet soil.
- Sunlight: Full sun.
- Planting depth: Plant cloves 2–3 inches deep with the pointed end up, flat end down.
- Spacing: 6 inches apart within rows, rows 12 inches apart.
- Mulching: Apply 4–6 inches of straw mulch after planting to insulate against freeze-thaw cycles and retain moisture through winter.
- Scapes: Like all hardneck varieties, Jachlo will send up a curling flower stalk (scape) in late spring. Cut it when it makes one full curl to redirect energy into bulb development—and don't toss it. Garlic scapes have a mild, fresh garlic flavor and are wonderful chopped into stir-fries, pestos, and eggs.
- Harvesting: Loosen soil with a fork before lifting. Brush off excess soil and cure in a shaded, well-ventilated spot for 3–4 weeks before storing.
-
Storage: Purple Stripe garlic stores approximately 4–6 months when properly cured. Keep in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space—not the refrigerator.
