Spearmint (Mentha spicata) is the milder, sweeter cousin of peppermint—same refreshing mint character, but without the intense menthol kick. Native to Europe and the Middle East, it's actually one of the oldest cultivated herbs in the world and the variety most commonly used in cooking. If peppermint is too bold for your taste, spearmint is likely the mint you're looking for.
SHIPPING INFO: Herbs primarily ship in May.
Why Grow Spearmint?
🍃 Sweeter, More Versatile Flavor: Less menthol than peppermint makes spearmint the go-to choice for cooking, from mint jellies and sauces to salads and savory dishes.
🍵 Perfect for Teas & Drinks: A classic herbal tea herb, and a staple in mojitos, lemonades, and other fresh summer drinks.
🌱 Effortless to Grow: Like all mints, spearmint is vigorous and forgiving—a great herb for beginners.

Cultivation Tips
- Soil: Moist, well-draining soil with moderate fertility. Spearmint is adaptable and not particularly fussy.
- Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. It handles shade better than many herbs, making it a good option for spots that don't get full sun all day.
- Watering: Keep soil consistently moist in garden beds. In containers, let the surface dry out slightly between waterings to avoid waterlogging.
- Harvesting: Snip stems just above a leaf node to encourage full, bushy growth. Harvest regularly to keep the plant productive and delay flowering—once it flowers, the flavor can become slightly bitter.
- Containment: Spearmint spreads by underground runners and will take over a bed if left unchecked. Containers are a great option, or use a root barrier when planting in the ground.
