Polana Raspberry is an exceptionally early ripening primocane raspberry prized for its high productivity and ability to extend the raspberry season, especially in cooler climates. Originally developed in Poland, Polana begins producing weeks earlier than many fall-bearing varieties, often ripening up to three weeks ahead of Heritage. This vigorous grower produces glossy, medium to large red berries with excellent flavor, making it ideal for fresh eating, freezing, baking, and preserving. With its compact canes and reliable yields, Polana is a favorite for gardeners looking to bridge the gap between summer and fall raspberries.

Growing Information

🌱 Plant Type: Bare root raspberry (primocane / fall-bearing)
🌱 Hardiness Zones: 4–9
🌱 When to Plant: Early spring, as soon as soil can be worked
🌱 When to Harvest: Late summer through fall (often beginning late July to early August, depending on location)

Cultivation Tips

Soil requirements: Plant in well-drained, fertile soil rich in organic matter. Avoid low spots where water may pool.
Sunlight: Full sun to partial shade. Full sun encourages earlier ripening and higher yields, though light afternoon shade can help in hotter climates.
Watering: Water consistently, especially during establishment and dry periods. Soil should remain moist but not soggy. Mulching helps retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Fertilization: Polana benefits from additional fertilizer in May and June to support its vigorous growth and high productivity.
Harvesting: Berries are ready when fully colored and release easily from the plant. Harvest every few days during peak season.
Pruning: Polana fruits on first-year canes. Many growers cut canes to the ground in late winter for a single, strong fall harvest.
Spacing: Space plants approximately 18–30 inches apart for proper airflow and cane development.
Pollination: Self-fertile—no additional plants required.

History

Polana Raspberry was developed in Poland through selective breeding focused on early ripening and high productivity. Its ability to begin fruiting well ahead of many fall-bearing varieties quickly made it popular with growers seeking to extend the raspberry season—particularly in northern climates where shorter summers can limit production.
