Spring White is a softneck garlic variety from August's Harvest in Ontario. If you're new to softneck garlic, this is a great place to start! Softnecks produce more cloves per bulb than hardnecks, store longer after harvest, and adapt well to a wider range of climates.
Spring White delivers a clean, classic garlic flavor with a pleasant bite that mellows beautifully when cooked. If you grew Silver Rose with us in previous seasons, Spring White is a similar softneck type and a natural next step.
SHIPPING INFO: Seed garlic starts shipping in early October.
Why Grow Spring White Garlic?
🧄 Outstanding Storage Life: Softneck Silverskin-type garlic is the longest-storing garlic you can grow. Properly cured bulbs can keep 8–12 months in a cool, dry spot, giving you homegrown garlic well into the following year.
🌡️ Wide Climate Adaptability: Unlike hardneck varieties, softneck garlic doesn't require a hard winter to perform well. That makes it a reliable choice for warmer climates where hardnecks can struggle.
🎀 Perfect for Braiding: The soft, flexible stems make Spring White ideal for traditional garlic braiding—a practical and beautiful way to store and display your harvest.
Growing Information
🌱 Plant Type:
🌱 Hardiness Zones: 3–9
🌱 When to Plant: Fall, 4–6 weeks before the ground freezes; can also be planted in early spring in milder climates
🌱 When to Harvest: Mid to late summer, when the lower leaves have yellowed and the plant begins to fall over naturally
Cultivation Tips
- Soil: Rich, well-draining soil with good fertility. Garlic does not like to sit in wet soil.
- Sunlight: Full sun.
- Planting depth: Plant cloves 2–3 inches deep with the pointed end up, flat end down.
- Spacing: 6 inches apart within rows, rows 12 inches apart.
- Mulching: In colder zones (roughly zone 6 and below), apply 4–6 inches of straw mulch after planting to insulate against freeze-thaw cycles and retain moisture through winter. In warmer climates, mulching is less critical but can still help with moisture retention.
- No scapes: Unlike hardneck varieties, Spring White does not produce garlic scapes. All of the plant's energy goes directly into bulb development, which is one reason softnecks tend to produce more cloves per bulb.
- Harvesting: Softneck garlic is ready when the lower leaves have yellowed and the tops begin to fall over. Loosen soil with a fork before lifting—never pull by the stem. Brush off excess soil and cure in a shaded, well-ventilated spot for 3–4 weeks before storing.
- Storage: Properly cured Spring White can store 8–12 months in a cool, dry, well-ventilated space. Do not refrigerate (this triggers sprouting).
- Braiding: If you plan to braid your garlic, cure the bulbs with the tops still attached and braid while the stems are still slightly pliable, before they dry out completely.
