Cultivation Tips
• Soil requirements: Plant in loose, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Potatoes perform best in fertile soil with good drainage to allow tubers to develop properly.
• Sunlight: Full sun (6–8+ hours daily) for best growth and yields.
• Planting: Plant seed potatoes about one month before your average last frost date or once soil can be worked. Larger potatoes may be cut into pieces with at least one eye each before planting.
• Spacing: Plant seed pieces about 12 inches apart in rows spaced 30–36 inches apart.
• Watering: Provide consistent moisture throughout the growing season. Even watering helps support healthy tuber development.
• Hilling: As plants grow, mound soil around the stems to protect developing potatoes from sunlight and encourage higher yields.
• Climate considerations: This variety performs best in cooler growing conditions and is less tolerant of extreme heat.
Harvesting
Dark Red Norland potatoes are typically ready to harvest about 70–90 days after planting. They are often harvested early as tender “new potatoes,” but can also be left to mature for larger tubers. This variety has a short dormancy period and is best enjoyed fresh.
